Zurich Zoo is considered one of the best in Europe. The zoo is home to approximately 4000 animals of 340 different species. Their habitats are designed to be natural, ranging from the Himalayan Mountains to South American grasslands to the Masoala rainforest. Eco-systems have been created in which the animals, including endangered species, can roam freely in spacious areas of land. A petting zoo also allows close contact between children and native livestock as well as domesticated animals.   www.zoo.ch

Eastern Switzerland: Heidi Tour – Grisons

heids_trail.jpgThrough her Heidi books, Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) created a romantic, nature-oriented image of Switzerland. Translated into 50 languages with many millions of printed copies, Heidi is a classic of children’s literature. The Heidi Village in Maienfeld virtually transports visitors into the era when the children's story was written. Experience the Heidi Trail that will lead you through the idyllic landscape to the Heidi House and the Heidi Alp.    www.heididorf.ch

Central Switzerland: The Lake Lucerne Region

luzern.jpgAs both the city of Lucerne and the Lake Lucerne Region are often referred to as ‘the essence of Switzerland’, it is aptly stated that, “In a small amount of space this region embodies almost everything that is a part of Switzerland: a city whose old town dates back to the Middle Ages, a lake with Europe‘s most extensive inland navigation and a panorama of the Alps, all of which provides an ideal setting for combining excursions and allowing the visitor to explore and experience the Lake Lucerne Region from a different angle”.    www.luzern.com

Western Switzerland: Castle Chillon

castle_chillon.jpg

An architectural jewel located in the most beautiful setting imaginable, between the shores of Lake Geneva and the Alps, this monument represents over 1,000 years of history. The rocky island on which the castle was built was both a natural protection and a strategic location to control the passage between northern and southern Europe. In its current state, the Castle of Chillon is the result of several centuries of adaptations, renovations and restorations.    www.chillon.ch
